Burbayar Lodge

Burbayar Jungle Adventure
3 days/2 nights

Burbayar is in the middle of a tropical rainforest in the Republic of Panama, on the summit of the San Blas range, between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Come into the home of hundreds of bird and mammal species, explore caves and rivers and walk along trails through a marvelous forest which is part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.

Departure Dates: Scheduled on request with a minimum of two people.
2011 Rates: $445 plus 7% Panama tax per person in double occupancy; additional $180 plus tax for single occupancy.


ITINERARY:

Day 1 Panama City - Burbayar Nature Reserve

Leave Panama City early this morning, traveling for 2 hours in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle East on the Pan American Highway on a jungle road to get to Burbayar Nature Reserve. After lunch you will scout the surroundings of the lodge to catch sight of several hummingbird species such as the Little Hermit, Garden Emerald, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Black Throated Mango or parrots including the Mealy Amazon, Brown-hooded Parrot and Blue-headed Parrot; toucans such as the Keel-billed Toucan and the Collared Aracari; or tanagers like the Golden-hooded Tanager, Sulphur-rumped Tanager, Summer Tanager and Flame-rumped Tanager, just to mention a few. From the gardens and balconies of the cabins you can see many more species.

Day 2
Burbayar Nature Reserve

Today you will explore the trails leading to majestic waterfalls and ancient rainforests. Burbayar Nature Reserve is located on the foothills of the Continental Divide protecting extraordinary flora and fauna. Being at the centre of the mountain range you share birds from both the Pacific and the Caribbean sides. The oceans are separated by barely 50 kilometers across in this area. It’s been estimated that there are about 400 bird species on the area. On the ground you will look for colorful frogs of the Dendrobates species and through the tree branches you will search for monkeys.

Day 3 Burbayar Nature Reserve - Panama City

This morning you will continue exploring the nearby trails with your Naturalist guide. After lunch you head back to Panama City. (BL)

TRIP CLASSIFICATION: Easy/moderate hiking 2-6 hours per day with rolling, slippery hills.  Lodge accommodations are comfortable.

INCLUDED: Lodging, all land, air and water transportation within Panama. All airport/hotel transfers on scheduled arrival and departure dates, meals as specified in the itinerary (B - breakfast, L - lunch, D - dinner), park, museum and related entrance fees, local guides’ services and expenses and the services of an in-bound land operator for airline re-confirmations and tour operations.

NOT INCLUDED: International airfare, tourist card ($5 per person), meals not specified in the itinerary, alcoholic beverages, personal equipment, extras in hotels (laundry, telephone calls, room service, etc.) or gratuities.

NOTE:  Weight restrictions apply to luggage in commercial and chartered flights within Panama.  A maximum of 25 lbs. of checked luggage and 10 lbs. of carry-on per person is allowed.  Arrangements can be made with Ancon Expeditions to store luggage that will not be needed while away from the city.  Excess baggage charges assessed by commercial carriers are the responsibility of the passenger.
EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST: Binoculars (preferably 7x35 or larger), camera with extra batteries & film, flashlight with extra bulb & batteries, bathing suit, insect repellant, sunscreen, hat, day pack, water bottle, lightweight/quick dry cotton clothes, windbreaker, sandals, sneakers/hiking boots, rain gear, money in small denominations, toiletries & personal medications.
