Guayabo Archeological Site Tour
Ancient stone carvings of alligator and jaguar gods, ingeniously engineered Pre-Columbian aqueducts where water still flows, and paved roads receding into a lush rainforest - all of these things hint to Costa Rica's mysterious past civilizations.

Costa Rica may not be famous for its archaeological history like Guatemala's Tikal or the Incan ruins of Peru, but veiled in the shadow of the Turrialba Volcano - like a mythical "lost city" from a storybook - lies a mysterious ancient city that was home to over 10,000 people who seemed to have mysteriously vanished just before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century.

This region, known as Guayabo National Monument, is Costa Rica's most important archaeological site and its only named National Monument.

The excavations at Guayabo have revealed a network of cobblestone causeways and streets, open and closed aqueducts, cisterns, stairways, mounds, petroglyphs, monoliths, tombs, and sculptures that belong to a pre-Columbian city, which was inhabited between 1000 B.C. and 1400 A.D.

For your tour a guide will walk you through the entire park while explaining the findings of the excavations and the history of the people that once lived there.  This tour is good for individuals of  all ages.

Transport from San Jose hotels early in the morning.   Arrival to the put-in place.  In the mighty Tempisque River, we board a boat that takes us to the heart of Palo Verde National Park, which has the most valuable wetland in Costa Rica.

Palo Verde national park, located in the low riverbank of the Tempisque River, is made up of an ecosystem of flooded plains, bordered by rivers and by a chain of limestone fiords. Palo Verde is one of the places with the highest biodiversity in the country; there are approximately 15 different habitats, as a result of the varied topography that includes flooded areas, drainages, and the influence of tides.

Among the habitats, wetlands can be found: lagoons and swamps of salty and fresh water. These ecosystems are declared of world priority according to the Ramsar Conference. In addition, you can see mangroves, pastures, small forests across the plains, tropical dry forests, flooded forests, and evergreen forests.

Hacienda Tayutic Experience
This one of a kind excursion through Costa Rican history and culture brings traditional rural customs to life for visitors. You will walk through the old Sitio de Mata village church with its stained glass windows more than century old, stroll through its enchanting gardens, marvel at the exquisite orchid greenhouse and the aromatic herb garden, and wonder at the strange labyrinth and lake that hint at mystery.

Later, your preconceptions about a typical day in the Costa Rican rural milieu will change, as you become a close-up observer and participant in both historical and modern processing of the products of dense, dark green fields of coffee plants, wavy oceans of sugar cane, and a newer arrival to our local agriculture, trees full of macadamia nuts.

This excursion into the rural Costa Rica of yesteryear is a vivid and remarkable experience, part of which is our organically cultivated brown sugar, including the typical tapa dulce, or brown sugar cakes made in wooden molds. Be sure to take a taste! You will drink our own gourmet coffee prepared by a professional barista, or coffee specialist, and finish with an exotic cocktail featuring our coffee liqueur, organic brown sugar and macadamia essence.
