Hiking in search of the famous Quetzal
Visitors to Trogon Lodge and the area of San Gerardo de Dota, even those who are not avid birdwatchers, are amazed when they get to observe one Resplendent Quetzal. Considered as one of the most gorgeous birds in the New World, that inhabits this area year round Con. With its metallic green plumage, crimson breast and belly and its incredible streamer-like feathers, watching a male Quetzal in its magical fly, is a unique, breathtaking experience.

Of all the countries where quetzals are found, the best chance to see them in the wild is probably in Costa Rica, where elevated cloud forests harbor important populations of the species.

Trogon Lodge Canopy Tour
This new attraction at Trogón Lodge was built with two priorities in mind: to create a fun and learning experience that offers a high level of comfort to the participants. Located along primary and secondary Cloud Forest, the platforms are situated in the midst of the Lodge private grounds. The tree platforms offer 360º views, with independent and redundant safety systems. All cables and slings meet highest standards of quality and gear is top of the line, including both waist and chest harnesses (an innovation in Costa Rica), helmets and gloves. After a short walk along a private trail to the first platform, located on ground level, participants receive a safety talk and are introduced into the general aspects by our guides. First cable is 47 m. long to our second platform – Giganton. Next cable is 73 m long and crosses the Savegre River, arriving to the third platform – Aguacatillo – located on the ground and an excellent spot to search for Quetzals and others. A cable of 69m leads to Garroton – the fourth platform, continuing onto Platform five, a beautiful wooden deck on the ground.

Birdwatching Tour
Birdwatching is one of our main attractions... the beautiful environment of biological corridors make this attractive region a paradise, where more than 170 species of birds peacefully coexist with man. Various migratory species arrive throughout the different seasons of the year, joining the native species to add still more colorful views for birdwatchers. Among the visitors are the Orioles, Warblers, Tennessees and Raptors - while their native hosts include Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, Yellow-winged Vireo, the Flame-throated Warbler, Black-cheeked Warbler, Yellowish Flycatcher, Barred Becard, Tufted Flycatcher, Silvery-fronted Tapaculo, Zeledonia, Torrent Tyrannulet, Collared Trogon, Scintillant Hummingbird, Volcano Hummingbird, Fiery-throated Hummingbird, Spotted Wood-Quail, and of course the most wanted Resplendent Quetzal. In the highlands of the Paramo one can find the Volcano Junco and Timberline Wren.

Horseback Riding Tour
Mount a horse and recapture the sense of adventure felt by the pioneers searching for the promised land. You will follow well- marked, safe paths with your guide into our beautiful Tropical Cloud Forest Reserve, having the chance to observe the flora and fauna so particular from this area, the amazing valley views, and the magnificent Savegre River flowing through this tropical highland paradise.

Waterfall Tour
One of the most impressive escenaries in the area is with not doubt the Savegre River Waterfall. Just within an hour walk you will have the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful waterfall surrounded by a dense cloud forest. Your guide will take you through the forest and show you the gorgeous flora and fauna that spreads alongside the crystal waters of the Savegre River, until the point where it turns into an amazing white veil, the Savegre River Waterfall, one more reason to fall in love with San Gerardo de Dota!

Hiking through a high altitude forest (Parque Nacional Los Quetzales)
An activity that any birdwatcher should miss! You will have the opportunity to observe endemic species of birds typical of this region. You will also learn about this type of forest well known as Páramo (forest desert). On this trip you will some areas such as “Cerro de la Muerte, the pathway to Providencia and other highlands of the Inter-American Highway.
